I love to visit schools, libraries and bookstores! Choose a program below or email me to discuss creating a special presentation for your group.
NEW! "Virtual" author visits via Skype. Click here for details.

Students will discover how authors turn fun facts into non-fiction
books and use their creative ideas to create interesting fiction
stories. They will also learn about the publishing process and
how a manuscript becomes a book.

Ms. Slade will read her popular picture books, Animals are Sleeping, What's New at the Zoo?, and What's the Difference? This interactive program shares fascinating animal facts along with encouraging news about how people are helping endangered animals.
Ms. Slade will read one of her biographies and discuss the importance
of this individual in American history.
This program is especially
popular in February (Black History Month) and March (Women’s
History Month).
Children benefit the most from my visits when I present to smaller groups (1 - 3 classrooms) at a time. In this setting, children can ask questions, interact with props, and easily see my books.
Please contact the author for presentation rates.
I also offer "virtual" school author visits via Skype. You can earn free books for your school with your virtual visit. Click here to read all about it!
(Note: Occasionally I volunteer my time for local charity events. I've appeared at school book fairs, United Way fund raisers, etc. for no charge. If you're planning such an event in my area, let me know. I'm happy to help out as my schedule allows.)
Wow! The biggest and most colorful Thank You letter I've received! —From the second grade at Adler Elementary School.
“Ms. Slade’s visit was a huge success! She has a great rapport with students and tells them what they are interested in hearing about the writing process. Her presentation is enthusiastic, inspiring, and fun, as she takes them through the steps from idea to publication. In addition to being eager to pick up their pencils and write, students learn the virtues of hard work and persistence to achieve their goals.”
—Sue Elsea, 6th Grade Teacher
Highland Middle School
—Beautiful thank you notes from students at Copeland Manor School!!
“Thank you for coming to our school. My class really related
to your road to publishing story, and how it didn’t just
happen on the first try. We really enjoyed your presentation, especially
when we helped make your upcoming book come to life by participating
in the chorus, ‘Shh, shh, the animals are sleeping.’ It
was fun to guess the animals in your book! Thank you for reading
one of your biographies. It was a real treat to hear an author
read her own work!”
—Ms. Spinney, Prairie Crossing Charter School
Teacher, Multiage Grades 1 and 2

—A few of the awesome letters from Prairie Crossing School!!
"Thank you so much for coming to our homeschool group! Our children and parents enjoyed your presentation very much. You did a great job speaking and made it very interesting for the kids, even with the range we have in the group. They were all happy to have had you come and speak, and found the publishing process fascinating as well as the fun animal facts that you shared! Your presentation was very well done."

A poem from a first grader named Avra —
"Ms. slade, ms. slade, you're nice and kind
ms. slade, ms. slade, you write the best books
ever working so hard and trying you'er best
I think you should stay as a author."
"My students loved our virtual school visit and to see and talk to someone so far away. The students were astounded they could see inside an author's house where you work. During your book reading the class was completely engaged, and they enjoyed walking up to the camera to ask questions for Q & A time. The ability to make a personal connection with someone who writes books they enjoy was so empowering. Right after your visit one student told me she wanted to write books when she grew up!"
